Q+A (This Thread has cookies. You like cookies, Don't you?)

Postby ilythor on Fri Jan 16, 2009 2:48 am

Before posting please visit the FAQ and the About Eq2 Emulator articles

This thread is here for you guys to ask the Dev Team what you want to know. You may ask "why here? we have a whole forum!" Well, this way it gets sent up to the Dev Teams Bi-weekly (starting on the dot from the first question posted), and they will get answered. It also allows us the community to better structure our questions. It easier because 3 people won't ask the same question, and as everyone knows. For every question that is asked, there where 10 unwilling to ask it. (Please before asking any questions, consult the FAQ, and eventually this thread). Every time a question is asked, I will edit this post and chuck it in here. Every 2 weeks, it gets sent off to the Dev Teams. So please! Fire Away!

Oh, and there were no cookies!

Since these questions have been answered, I will put up some answers now then. From here, they will be added to the FAQ. Thanks for all your help again!

Who is the EQ2Emulator Community Manager? You know, the person who is going to liason between the community and the development teams and keep the community informed so the devs can get the work done?

I even have an answer! If anyone is wondering who this Ilythor guy is, he's the current front-runner in our quest to fill this position of CM, something we have desperately needed here for a long time. So when you see his posts, feel motivated to jump in there and make some noise. That's what he's trying to accomplish.

It is nearly impossible to formulate a "progress bar" for things which you have no idea where the end may be. Content, for instance... we do not know exactly how many spawns are in one zone, and with there being dozens of aspects to a single spawn, how would you gauge 0-100% completion? You cannot.

This is not an exact science. I felt I came up with a very good solution to giving what "status" a particular component is in via the Project Status thread. Interested Community Members are simply going to need to use that guide + log into our test server(s) to see for themselves exactly how far along we are at any given stage.

The Minilogin (EQ2LoginServer) can be setup for WAN play, far as I know. This repack is not, so you'd have to figure out how on your own.

The minilogin solution is primarily for those on slow WAN links or dialup access who cannot get to our servers, so they too can play around with EQ2Emulator.

Plus, there is a max account ID of 5, so only 5 people can log into a Minilogin server. The reason for this is that we require players on our public servers for testing and reporting issues.

Lets keep this up guys!

I would love to crown him King of All Forums, but that is up to him - and you. So please, give him a hand.

I highly suggest building QA into the wiki or we have some other documentation feature.

Aye, we've been discussing that very thing. I just added a link to About EQ2Emulator today from the start of Ilythor's questioning. He will add to it as we develop most questions and answers.

Thanks for all the hard work on this.

Any chance of adding a few progress bars somewhere? It could help give us a rough idea of about where everything's at. I log into the server every now and then, but I'm still curious how much has been done and what's left.

I added your question Kildov, but only the progress bar part. This is because the Eq2Emulator progress can be found here: http://eq2emulator.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=942

The bars are a plausible idea, but I imagine they would need a far amount of attending every time something is added. I'll still ask the Dev's about it, because well hey. You asked.

Our Q+A section is the Forum Support Threads, and the Wiki is suppose to be our Community-Run Documentation feature, yet no one is running it.

Thank you for the ideas, but we've already tried them. Also; Suggestions go here.
